Generative AI: Hands-On Exploration of the Tools and the Societal Impacts

Co-taught with Dr. Elisabeth Sylvan (course lead, course designer). In this course, students explore Generative AI by learning firsthand what these tools can and cannot do, how they affect society, and how to decide when, whether, and why to use them. Students learn to understand, design, and build with generative AI while grappling with the ethical questions it raises. Activities include improving workflows, creating designs and 3D renderings, vibe coding apps, analyzing datasets and research, and illustrating concepts. At the same time as using GenAI tools, we critically examine outputs for quality, bias, hallucinations, and efficiency. Readings and discussions address AI ethics, societal impact, responsible use, and implications for engineers, designers, and other makers. Classes combine brief overviews, hands-on work with AI tools, and group discussion. Students finish the class with a personal “AI Manifesto” framework for how they want to use, and not use, AI responsibly. [fall 2026]
